A big part of the foundation in week 1 of Calling in “The One” is about setting intention. I want to go a bit deeper than the book here, and look at what is behind setting an intention and share nine steps for doing so.
Here are nine steps for you. Nine as in the number of completeness—like the 9 months of gestation for a baby, nine innings in a baseball game, or 9 as the last single digit before reaching double digits.
But what is behind an effective intention? Desire and Emotion. As simple as that. That is what sets aside an intention that you set with your mind versus one you set with your body and heart. So, before you begin, with curiosity and awareness, ask yourself these two questions:
- How badly do I want it?
- What is at stake if I DON’T do it?
Once you answer these questions, honestly and truthfully, we can begin intention setting.
Let’s explore these steps:
- Clarify your vision. Move beyond vague desires. The clearer and more specific you can make it, the better you’ll know when you’ve achieved it.
- Connect with your deeper purpose. Ask yourself, what is your why? What difference will it make, both for your life and for others?
- Write it down. The act of writing transforms abstract thought into something concrete.
- Create a practice where you enter into the vision fulfilled. What does it feel like to walk in that space? What does it feel like to be that person? Take a few minutes to embody it—walk as if, smell it, taste it, feel the surroundings.
- Identify your first steps. Break down your intention into doable actions. Intention brings action.
- Release attachment to outcomes. Trust the process. Paradoxically, holding on too tightly to your intention may create resistance or judgment. Practice forgiveness, compassion, and curiosity.
- Create accountability structures. Share your intentions with a trusted friend or coach who will ask how you’re progressing, support you, and provide gentle accountability.
- Recognize your limiting beliefs and release them. If you notice persistent patterns of stuckness, seek help to move beyond them. I couldn’t do it myself—I recognized where I got stuck and sought help.
- Celebrate your progress! Acknowledge each step forward. Celebrate yourself as you show up for yourself. ❤︎
There is a saying: “Live life more from intention and less from habit.” Step into your life. Show up. Just do it.
